P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold

The P0420 code is one of the most common check engine codes, and it's directly related to your catalytic converter. Officially defined as "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)," this code indicates that your vehicle's computer has detected that the catalytic converter is not converting exhaust pollutants efficiently enough to meet specifications.

How the System Detects It

Your vehicle has two oxygen (O2) sensors surrounding the catalytic converter: one upstream (before) and one downstream (after). A healthy converter causes a significant difference in O2 readings between these sensors โ€” the downstream sensor should show much steadier readings. When the converter degrades, both sensors show similar patterns, and the ECU triggers P0420.

Common Causes (Not Always the Converter!)

1. Worn catalytic converter โ€” Yes, the converter may genuinely need replacement. This is the most common cause in vehicles with 80,000+ miles. 2. Faulty downstream O2 sensor โ€” A bad sensor can give false readings. Much cheaper to replace ($100-250). 3. Exhaust leak โ€” A leak near the converter can skew O2 sensor readings. 4. Engine misfire โ€” Unburned fuel damages the converter over time. 5. Oil or coolant contamination โ€” Internal engine leaks contaminating the catalyst.

Repair Costs

O2 sensor replacement: $100-300. Exhaust leak repair: $100-400. Catalytic converter replacement: $500-2,500 (parts + labor). Always diagnose the actual cause before replacing the most expensive component.
